## About The Pull Request
I fixed should_not_sleep() locally as it wasn't catching all cases. I
PR'd this but want to do some damage control before its merged so our
linters dont fail on master
This revealed some procs that are sleeping but could run in
SHOULD_NOT_SLEEP procs.
I'll probably keep doing more of these.
## Why It's Good For The Game

## Why It's Good For The Game
I think co-op mechanics are fun. If you manage to get a friend, this is
an option with zero water management. I feel like janitor borgs don't
really have much the way to cooperate with their base mechanics. You can
walk into a department and clean it wordlessly. This gives the option
where you can clean with your friend (or the crime scene you're trying
to scrub)

pre-requisite to my follow up pr that serializes all the verbs arguments

## About The Pull Request
**YOU!** [Have you ever wanted to be a strange, round, rubbery little
creature with absolutely no fine motor control? No? Well you should have
thought of that before you went to sleep somewhere which gave me the
AMPLE opportunity to slide my EXTRAORDINARY new creation right onto your
FORMER HANDS!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjdgFSoQ00w)
Introducing Ball Mittens and Latex Paw Mittens: inflatable latex gloves
that, once on, become your hands for the foreseeable future! Big
shoutout to **Onule** for the sprites!
Ball Mittens are now a new equip-able lewd item available in the loadout
(Toys > Lewd Toys) or found in the Lustwish vendor.
They can be reskinned mid-round into Latex Paw Mittens, which are ALSO
available directly as an _incredible_ loadout item in the Gloves tab
with full GAGS color customization across three extraordinary color
groups! All for only four easy payments of no money at all!
While wearing either variant, the wearer experiences a suite of
DELIGHTFUL fumble mechanics representing a meteoric rise above the old
versions which just meant you could do basically nothing!
Here's what they do:
- Item pickup requires getting down on your knees and wrestling with the
item for a variable delay, with a small chance of you struggling even
longer because of how hard it is.
- Inventory retrieval from pockets, ID slot, belt, suit storage, and
_many more_ has a brief delay to represent fishing it out of your
pockets with your clumsy mitts! NOTE: This functionality is limited by
core aspects of the game engine, certain items are not subject to this
delay such as any item which is a container including but not limited to
toolbelts, backpacks and more. I tried but eventually gave up.
- Clothing has an extended timer. Have you ever tried unbuttoning a
jacket with paws the size of your face?
- Machine and console interaction requires a 1.5-second delay (skipped
when in combat mode, where you are presumably STRIKING DOWN the EVIL
machine)!
- Self-removal takes a full minute via the resist key or clicking the
item in the HUD. I was thinking of just making it impossible to remove
them on your own outright, but I changed my mind, aren't I swell?
- Throwing has a 5% chance of the item simply tumbling to the floor
instead. I thought about monekying with strength or like half a dozen
other things which I scrapped in the prototype phase when I realized how
_VIOLENTLY ANNOYING_ they would get over time!
- Guns suffer a serious spread penalty! It's hard to use guns when your
beans won't even fit inside the trigger guard!
- Restraint escape time is tripled! How the hell do you escape handcuffs
with your bare hands, let alone paws?!
- Stripping other players is much harder, I think it speaks for itself,
you're a cat, have you ever seen a cat steal your shoes? Absurd!
- The items are fire-proof because they're supposed to play into the
fantasy of having paws so it'd be lame if they could be trivially burned
off you and you can also use insulated gloves on them to witness the
absolute peak of comedy in the form of a funny easter egg!
- Surgery on the wearer is not blocked in order to play into the fantasy
that you actually have paws, wow! The mittens are considered transparent
to surgical operations! This means you don't have to have your hands
ripped off to get arm surgery! This was **obscenely** challenging to
implement! This and the ability to add insulation are very small
concessions to make it not pure agony to play with these on as say, an
engineer. They are heavily outweighed by the downsides.
- Another player can strip them off normally. The OOC safeword removes
them instantly if you decide the fun really has to end! Remember that
this function exists boys and girls!
- The items make appropriate rubber squeaking sounds, play flavor
messages for the wearer, and have visible bystander messages so the
whole crew can enjoy the endless novelty afforded by your predicament.
Also since this changes the appearance of the Cat Gloves, I've decided
to just go ahead and add the light QOL functions to these too, they
don't provide any gameplay advantage whatsoever. Arguably they make your
life harder.
## Why It's Good For The Game
You have been granted a GIFT. A BLESSING. An entirely voluntary and
opt-in set of squishy latex paws that make everything slightly harder in
ways that are charming rather than punishing.
More seriously: this adds a significant level of functionality to an
item which is otherwise a dead end
It also adds SKINS which you can sell on the Steam Market for PENNIES ON
THE DOLLAR!†
What's more, many manhours have been expended testing these to get the
balance just right!
†Disclaimer, you cannot actually sell the skins
Also I have already gotten approval from maintainers so I'm just writing
this for fun.
## Proof Of Testing
There are 30 to 50 copies of Tgstation.dmb in my recycle bin because I
meticulously compiled and tested every feature with every change to this
code that I made because I am **NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY!** And
also I don't know how to use VSC. I think that's adequate and I don't
want to download OBS again. Oh and there are like a bajillion commits of
my dumb ass trying to fix this.

## About The Pull Request
Transforming weapons could change their sharpness which would break
material force modification as materials modify the force differently
based on item sharpness. Also the force was hard reset every time you
switched it on or off, which would also break the math.
I've rewritten the transforming component to preserve force and
sharpness, and account for different sharpness of the item when switched
on/off. Additionally, I've updated the two-handed component to use the
new system to make it easier to work with/less prone to breaking.

## About The Pull Request
Removes Object tab, which didn't work as it required a whole reload of
your verbs to update to what verbs would show up in it (which is very
hard to actually trigger as a player), but leaves the verbs that had
them show in the dropdown menu.
Removes the Point-To and Examine verbs from the Stat panel, now it's
commandbar only. Originally only did Point-To, but because the stat
panel sorts itself by the category of the item, then the order of the
name, I had to remove Examine's category so it would remain sorted the
same.

Removes Server tab for players (not Admins) by moving Show Map Vote
Tallies to the OOC tab, as that was the only verb there.
Activate Held Object has been moved to IC since it's a roundstart verb,
I thought I should leave it be (do we have numbers on how many people
use these? Why would someone use the verb over clicking on the item
in-game or Z? Should I remove this too?).
Admin's Object Possession verbs are now in Admin Fun instead of Object.

## Why It's Good For The Game
We have 2 tabs that exists for a total of 3 procs, 2 of them fit
elsewhere and the last one doesn't work at all. Most verbs here don't
show up in the stat panel at all for the vast majority of players due to
the stat panel not actually loading them in when it's available, which
to me shows that it's a feature that isn't really cared about anyways.
It also helps newer players because there's less tabs to navigate and
less verbs to sift through, we have a ton of verbs that basically don't
need to exist and they only exist to make looking for the important
verbs a larger hassle.
## Changelog

## About The Pull Request
[Adds a visual tick helper, integrates it into SSmove and
such](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/commit/e97035f9f74fad5c67c5bf19d8d5d3bb4bd476b4)
Basically, if we do "stuff" during verb time then the next chance
clients have to actually see it is on the next visual tick (rather then
the normal "this tick"). This is cause clients get their next frame
during maptick, and maptick runs before verbs.
We want to be able to handle this properly because if you say, create an
object and then move it on the same VISUAL tick (NOT game tick), it will
just teleport instead of playing out the move. I don't want this for
stuff like sparks, so we need a way to work around it.
[Moves most users of the _FAST flag to
_INSTANT](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/commit/6f96daac00519c69adc7554f52114798a65f3ad5)
These are the kids that don't immediately spawn something and the move
it, and we want to allow them to move actually as soon as possible
(important for stuff like space)
[Improves basic effect systems, makes their products delete when they
stop
moving](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/commit/172cb25d80ed34e1ec523172a1677fb524239fba)
Moves some stuff out to getters or vars so children can better decide
how long effects should last/how fast they should move. Uses this to
clean up weird dupe code used by explosions.
Makes all these effects delete on contact with something that stops
them. I'm doing this because an effect just hanging in the air looks
really really odd. Does have consequences for sparks that are already
moving at a wall though, might need a better way to handle that.
Makes all these effects use _FAST loops so they don't just hang in the
air for a second on spawn
Adds a setter proc on sparks for their duration, gonna use this to
improve their effects some
[Refactors overlay lights, adds support for animating their
images](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/commit/3ad0083cf2b536df51a6d93dca40eac20c1d62d1)
Implements light_render_source and relevant setters, this allows us to
replace the components of an overlay light with basically whatever we
want
Refactors overlay lighting to handle its images more consistently,
allowing us to hook into an image being modified
Combining the two of these will allow us to consistently copy a light's
image, modify it in some way, and then relay that modification back
down. Allowing us to animate it or do more advanced effects painlessly
Also, fixes ranges of 1 or less not rendering at all on initial set
(thank you kapu)
[In which I get fed up and add a macro helper for UID
generation](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/commit/aab48b03d407104d4f9cf9acb034494237def911)
[adds vv hooking for all existing lighting
vars](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/commit/b81c6200a0d74c36b440aa3f4c1f22c422090a2d)
[Upgrade effect system's dir picking to avoid duplicates when
possible](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/commit/18b622586b509c6be4c4bca4e3e7c175ad75fe91)
[Uses the technique described above to animate spark's lights out as
they
move](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/commit/67ba177982213799984a70e89536c5efb3d17e14)
This is a decently nice effect imo, it allows us to bump their power
(read, alpha) since it'll get animated away. I try to sync the animation
to the actual icon state's flow (it's 0.7s long). I also sped them up
somewhat to hopefully have a nicer looking effect? we'll see.
[Abstracts away intercepting overlay lights into a holder
datum](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/pull/95362/commits/b3f1fe74f2c3bab1d8912ab8a666bd05677ad032)
This should make it far easier to reuse this pattern!
[Fixes overlay lights flashing to double intensity when picked up off
the
ground](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/pull/95362/commits/1d83f2031fa2b33312b2aea4359c0c37c9d04ac7)
We needed to clear out their underlays BEFORE the animation
[Adds a flickering effect to flares and their
children](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/pull/95362/commits/b7a858e04a607c58b6c7fbe1476ffe2239e63bde)
I'm still not 100% happy with this, I was trying to avoid it feeling
like a heartbeat with random noise and I.. THINK it worked? it's
honestly quite hard to tell
[Adds the same flickering to lighters, welding tools and life
candles](https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/pull/95362/commits/3ec44027e17835ae96702cec5f0b12d1f4deb32b)
Also, updated light candles to mirror the appearance of normal candles
and use overlay lighting
EDIT:
I realized while working on flares that I accidentally double applied
color, so if you saw the sparks animations before now it was different
(less vibrant). IDK if I like this better or worse but it is RIGHT and
that's what matters.
## Why It's Good For The Game
I got mad about how bad these looked, and this is a start at improving
them.
Also, adds a framework for more dynamic effects applied to overlay
lights (you could use this to apply a sort of "emergency rotating"
effect, or flicker/buzz for example).

## About The Pull Request
- The `prosthetic replacement` surgical operation has been reverted to
be closer to how it used to work: The operation is done targeting the
limb that's missing
The change was made out of necessity, as surgical state was tied to
limbs - you had to operate on the chest to re-attach limbs because there
was no limb to operate on.
To circumvent that, I have done the unthinkable of adding stumps when
you are dismembered.
- Missing limbs are now represented as an invisible, un-removable,
un-interactable limb.
Making this change was not as difficult as originally anticipated, and
(at least surface level) seems to have broken very little.
Surprisingly little had to change to make this work.
Direct accesses to `mob.bodyparts` was changed to `mob.get_bodyparts()`
with an optional `include_stumps` argument.
Similarly, `get_bodypart()` had an optional `include_stumps` added.
This means we ultimately barely needed to change anything, and in fact,
some loops/checks were able to be streamlined.
## Why It's Good For The Game
- As mentioned, this change was out of necessity and was easily the
least intuitive part of the broader changes. Reverting it back to how it
used to work should make it far easier for people to pick up on, and
means we can cut out a bunch of bespoke instruction sets that I had to
include.
- The addition of stumps also adds a ton of future potential - code wise
it allows for stuff like better damage tracking (we can transfer damage
between limb <-> stump rather than limb <-> chest), and feature we can
do "fun" stuff like have stumps bleed on dismemberment that you can
bandage.
## Changelog

del: "Add prosthetic limb" surgical operation has been reverted to be a
bit closer to how it used to work - you operate on the missing limb /
limb stump, rather than on the chest.
refactor: Missing limbs are now represented as limb stumps. In practice
this should change nothing (for now), as no features were rewritten to
make use of these besides surgery. Please report any oddities with
missing limbs, however.

## About The Pull Request
Fixes it so if you're playing a basic mob with the dextrous component
(eg. gorilla, dextrous holoparasite), you can still use "Pick up" in the
shift-right-click menu.
This is a rare situation, and I don't know how many people even use the
old right click menu anymore, but it was annoying me while testing
something else so I fixed it.
This doesn't impact telekinesis, because you don't get that option on
the right click menu from a distance anyway.
## Why It's Good For The Game
I think the "pick up" option in the menu on an item should probably pick
up the item.

## About The Pull Request
Merry Christmas!
This PR expands on the more gruesome areas of chef content, such as
cannibalism.
Human limbs can now be individually butchered for their meat and skin
with a knife or another butchering implement once the skin has been cut
and retracted (forks now can be used as bootleg retractors). If the limb
contains organs, those will need to be removed first, which also can be
quickly performed with a butchering tool at the cost of damaging the
inhards (head and chest will require the bone to be cut first, which can
be done with a butcher's cleaver if you don't have a saw)
You can also butcher humans whole by right clicking them with a
butchering implement on combat mode, which will attempt to gut/cut apart
the selected limb. Obviously this requires the limb to be prepped first,
so meat hooks/kitchenspikes now allow mobs strung on them to be operated
on without needing drapes. Its a pretty bad spot to be performing
surgeries at though, so beware! Torsos can only be butchered after all
other limbs have been. The gutting/butchering delay is based off the
owner's stat, halving if the limb is detached and doubling if the owner
is still alive and kicking.
<img width="392" height="265" alt="dreamseeker_D7QWbWKStd"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/050d7c25-3572-4b02-ae93-d8efefe54885"
/>
(The video is too large for github)
https://streamable.com/459a0y
After being butchered, most limbs will leave behind a nonfunctional
skeletal limb (with exceptions like jelly limbs with no skeleton inside)
which is always disabled. Skeleton chests husk their owner, so you'll
need to replace it first.
Gibbers now source their meat from the victim's limbs (and not their
species) at an RNG-based percentage based on the matter bin's tier.
As to allow individual limbs to be butchered, you can now perform (some)
surgeries on individual limbs. There are some obvious restrictions like
zombification or bioware surgeries, but most of the ones that make sense
can be performed on someone's chopped off head as long as you've got the
tools.
Wounds also contribute to surgeries now, major slash wounds count as
cut/open skin (and sealing the vessels would reduce their bleed rate),
and critical blunt wounds count as sawed bones.
I've refactored gibbers, butchering and meat spike code as well as fixed
some backend bugs while I was at it.
## Why It's Good For The Game
While rather gruesome, I feel like the freedom which these mechanics
provide fits us pretty well. We already have plenty of nasty stuff and
this doesn't really go that much further, and a chef serving their own
leg in their dish is pretty funny. (Also you can scrape plasma off
plasmamen bones)
## About The Pull Request
Inspired by #94233. `grind_results`(list) & `juice_typepath`(typepath)
are only used when grinding & juicing after which the atom is deleted.
This means if that object is not processed these vars occupy memory &
don't do anything.
Now these values are only generated on demand by calling their
respective procs. Considering how these vars are on the obj level the
memory savings are quite significant

## About The Pull Request
Another one of those things that I've noticed when playing around with
fish tanks; The slowdown lingered even when the fish tank (which depends
on the total weight of fish inside it) was no longer held and was only
updated another item is equipped or held.
This is because `attempt_insert` doesn't end up calling `DoUnEquip`,
which along with `equip_to_slot`, is one of the cornerstones of the
whole inventory system that we have had for over a decade. Luckily, this
doesn't break things entirely because `item/doMove` seems to have a
fallback, but it only covers held items and only does half of what
`DoUnEquip` does, because it's its own copypaste code, disconnected from
the standard unequip call stack.
I've done some changes to make sure `DoUnEquip` is always called on
`doMove` if we find that the item still has the IN_INVENTORY flag. I've
also updated the code comment for it as well, to emphasize that the
measure is a fallback and not an excuse to call forceMove or Move if we
know that the object is held or equipped on a mob.
If something doesn't work, it'll be likely caught by the CI (it's a core
feature of the game after all) or stack traces.
Also, despite equipment slowdown supporting all mob types, when
equipping/unequipping items it's only applied to carbon mobs. This is
not _strictly_ a contributing factor to the titled issue but it still
limits a balance feature that ought to affect all mobs with hands and/or
equipment slots.
## Why It's Good For The Game
Fixing issues with inventory and storages. Hopefully improving and
modernizing years old code a little.
## About The Pull Request
Empy lists. There are a lot of 'em.

Going through ways to reduce memory I found a few easy ones here. Wires,
the edible component, the seethrough component. None of these are really
a concern when it comes to needing lists in memory for performance
reasons. Wires aren't going to be cut most of the time for each door. A
lot of food does not have any junkiness. Seethrough component lies
dormant most of the round. Etc.
Making lists lazy in these cases should be a no brainer.
Everything I tested still seems to work exactly the same.

## About The Pull Request
Closes#93635
`unique_reskin` is no longer a list on `/item`, now `/datum/atom_skin`
The actual reskinning behavior has been moved out to
`/datum/component/reskinable_item`
PKC reskinning is now handled via alt-click reskin, rather than via the
retooling kit. The retooling kit has been removed.
There's no limit on how many times you can reskin your PKC (though
perhaps we limit it to one reskin and keep the retooling kit as a way to
allow a miner to reskin it a second time?)
The Ashen Skull unique reskin is still a trophy, and instead unlocks its
unique reskin option in the alt-click radial.
## Why It's Good For The Game
I'm unsure why the retooling kit exists on its own, when it's relatively
cheap and just performs the behavior of alt-click reskinning.
So to keep it consistent with all other forms of reskinning I've just
made it baseline. To accomplish that I refactored reskinning.
The new form of reskinning allows for greater potential in adding
reskins, allowing far more than just an icon state change. Also we can
put it on turfs and mobs and structures now which is cool I guess
There's also the added benefit of being able to see an item's reskins
without needing to instantiate it, which the loadout menu uses to great
effect.

## About The Pull Request
Heretic has received a complete overhaul. This PR touches nearly every
aspect of the antagonist. For readability's sake, not every change is
going to be listed in this pull request.
For the full list of changes please refer to the design doc:
https://hackmd.io/@BiST8PJVRjiwVPY86U3bLQ/B11HyChz1g.
Code by Me, @Xander3359 and @Arturlang
TGUI by @Arturlang
Sprites by OrcaCora and GregorDM
Writing bits by @necromanceranne
### Core changes
- Cross-pathing has been removed. Main knowledge spells are now
exclusive to their path (for the most part).
- For every main knowledge unlocked (save for the robes and the blade
upgrade), Heretics can choose one option from a draft of 3 random side
knowledges (this is a free point).
- Heretics can now purchase side knowledges from a new tab, the
"Knowledge Shop". Side-knowledges have been divided by tier (Stealth,
Defense, Summons, Combat and Main). Tiers are unlocked as you progress
toward your main path.
- Heretics now gain the grasp and mark upgrade immediately, but their
main knowledge choices cost twice as much (except for the first spell,
the robes and the blade upgrade).
- Path specific robes have been introduced! They come with their own set
of quirks.
- Each Path has received a passive ability. This passive is upgraded
when you first create your robes, and again when you complete the Ritual
of Knowledge.
- Paths have been rebalanced as a result of the removal of cross-path
progression. Cosmic and Moon paths have received soft reworks.
- Upon unlocking the path 2nd level or reaching a total of 8 points
worth of knowledge, Heretics will lose the ability to blade break (and
the limit on blades all together).
- Ascension now automatically calls the shuttle with no possibility of a
recall.
- Late join Heretic has been removed.
### New UI
<img width="750" height="635" alt="moon path ui"

### Knowledge shop

src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/3dc89b84-8c70-4d47-b612-54396e3ea6e7"
/>
### Quality of life //General balance changes
- Heretics will now gain X-ray vision for a few seconds when nearby an
eldritch essence (this effect has a cooldown).
- Ritual of knowledge now requires 1 uncommon item instead of 2. You may
now use a stunprod instead of a baton to complete the ritual. Beartraps
have been removed from the list of possible reagents.
- The maximum number of possible sacrifices required to ascend has been
reduced from 6 to 5 while the minimum has been upped to 4.
- Codex Cicatrix no longer requires a special pen to be made.
### Passive abilities
- Heretics now start with a passive ability. You can find what it does
on the path info tab after a path has been selected, and what they gain
when upgraded.
- Crafting your first set of Eldritch robes will bump your passive to
level 2.
- Unlocking the 2nd level will subsequently unlock your "Ritual Of
Knowledge"
- Completing the ritual of knowledge or ascending will net you the final
level.
### Path Specific Robes
- Armorer's Ritual is no longer a side knowledge. Each path will have
their own unique version of the ritual. This is placed after the 2nd
spell in the tree.
- Robes can no longer be destroyed by fire and acid, grant t4 flash
protection (Moth Heretics stay winning) and protection against basic
syringes, to bring them on par with other antagonist's armor sets.
- The recipe to craft the robes is now a set of armor/vest, a mask (any
mask will do now, not just gas masks), plus the unique reagent required
for the blades (Plasma for Cosmic, Trash For Rust, match for Ash and so
on)
- Wearing the robes as a non-heretic may yield some unfortunate
side-effects.
### Moon Path Rework
Moon path rework.
Moon Heretics gain immunity to brain traumas and slowly regenerate brain
health. Equipping the moon amulette channels its effects through the
moon blade; making it unblockable and cause sanity damage instead of
brute. Ring leader's Rise now summons an army of harmless clones that
explode when attacked; the explosion briefly stuns non-heretics and
cause sanity and brain damage to them. Moon blade can also now be used
when pacified and Moon spells are no longer blocked by regular anti
magic, only mind magic protection.
**Cosmic Path Rework**
Cosmic path has received the biggest batch of changes alongside Moon.
The path has been dead last in ascension and pickrate (less than 5%) for
almost 2 years. It did gain some popularity over the last few months,
reaching the highest ascension rate in the game (12%) while mantaining a
relatively low pickrate.
Cosmic sits in a weird spot, where pretty much every knowledge
surrounding the path is either mediocre or, in the case of the
ascension, dysfunctional. Yet it has maintained a smidge of relevancy
due to how quickly Cosmic heretics can capture and sacrifice targets
thanks to Star Touch.
As a result, the best course of action would be to rebalance the
entirety of the kit; granting the heretic more tools to manipulate space
and dictate the flow of a fight, while lessening their ability to end a
confrontation by instantly sleeping their opponents.
lastly The Star Gazer is now ghost controlled ; And they shoot lazers!

## Why It's Good For The Game
### Ok...but why do we want this?
Again, if you want my full reasoning, please check my doc
https://hackmd.io/@BiST8PJVRjiwVPY86U3bLQ/B11HyChz1g.
To keep it short and concise; Heretic is too complex and unintuitive for
its own good. Too impenetrable for new players and too abusable for
experienced players. This can be chalked up to a lot of poor design
decisions. But ultimately, what I believe being the biggest contributor
to the current status of Heretic is the ability to move into different
paths, also known as "Cross-Pathing".
### Cross Pathing my beloathed.
Cross-pathing, while cool in theory, overcomplicates the antagonist and
overloads them with power. Players dealing with the heretic are
incapable of working out what a given heretic can do. This also leads to
late game heretics having 3 rows Worth of action buttons and virtually
no weakness.
Over the last year, I've often received the understandable but also kind
of unfair accusations of making Heretic too powerful without a clear aim
or purpose.
My goal with the paths I've reworked over the last year (Rust,Void and
Blade) wasn't necessarily to just make them stronger (although that was
also part of the goal, as they were paths that were underperforming),
but for them to have more interactions with the sandbox and to better
live up to the fantasy presented to the player.
If an harbringer of frost gets countered by a cup of coffee, we probably
messed something up.
Unfortunately, the current incarnation of Heretic doesn't really allow
for surgical balance changes to specific paths. Every time a knowledge
gets buffed, we make every path that can easily tap onto that knowledge
stronger by default. It doesn't take a genius to understand why this
system is ultimately unsustainable.
### Blade Breaking
I feel that after a heretic has reached the near peak of their power,
they no longer need the ability to instantly escape any encounter. Check
my doc for my full reasoning.
## Less versatile, more specialized paths.
By removing cross-pathing, we remove a huge maintainability burden from
the antagonist. Paths can now be designed around clearer strengths and
weaknesses. They become easier to balance and less of an headache to
understand for everyone.
It also means we can give paths some needed quality of life quirks
without having to worry how such a change might have a knock-on effect
for other paths.
Ash heretics can finally let loose without dying by their own flames.
Cosmic Heretic can go to space without having to carry a modsuit. Moon
Heretic can use their abilities without fear of one random trauma
ruining their day, and so on.
### What a horrible night to have a curse...., wait how do I curse
people again?
As of right now the heretic tree has quite a hefty amount of trinkets
that pretty much never see use.
Partly because the tree itself is a nightmare to navigate. And partly
because why would anyone set up an elaborate plan or scheme when they
can unleash 2 rows of spell in the span of bunch of seconds.
Heretics mostly gravitate towards powers that push them towards greater,
more potent combat strength. If it doesn't contribute to killing people
quicker, it isn't worth doing for most. And given the opportunity cost
associated for taking those powers, they will remain that way so long as
there are better choices to be poached.
The new draft system encourages Heretics to play more with the tools at
their disposal. If you want to go for a specific combo from the side
path options, you may now do so by tapping into the knowledge shop.
Yes, the shop does include a few knowledges from the other paths. But
these are limited to 1 per path, are very expensive and can only be
unlocked very late into the shift.
## Drip Of the Mansus
The iconic heretic robe is actually sequestered to a side path that is
most easily access by only two paths at a time. Since heretic paths are
being made to be much more specialized, the most obvious way in which
this can be showcased is through an easily
identifiable outfit.
By using the robes, we can both telegraph WHAT heretic you are looking
at, and just how much power they've accumulated and when it is
reasonable to take the kid gloves off and treat them as a genuine
threat. If a heretic is in their
robes, that heretic is now a significantly more prominent danger to the
station.
It also serves as a useful means for gating some of the more powerful
effects of a heretic's path behind the robes, AND enable options for
disarming them of that power should they be captured without making it
something endemic to their mob.
A major problem with heretics is a lack of certainty as to how powerful
they have become. A heretics robes is one of the milestones to help
players dealing with heretics identify that.
### Will this be 100% fair and balanced?
This is a massive overhaul to a pretty complex and bloated antagonist.
I've done my best to show the changes to several maintainers and other
members of the community for their feedback. But at some point we'll
have to see how this behave in the environment to get a feel if
something is over or undertuned. (that's my way of saying, yes this is
likely gonna require a testmerge or two).
What I will say is that I'm not trying to change the core identity of
Heretic.
Heretics should have the upperhand in single encounters early on, be
able to joust a small group of players after they unlock their final
spell, and end the round when they ascend. They're a progression
antagonist. They should retain their payoff as well as pose a danger as
they grow stronger.
But if more players feel like they are more reliably able to play the
antagonist in more varied and interesting ways, rather than the
antagonist largely existing as a measuring stick for 'robustness' due to
its elitist design philosophy, then the rework has been a success. There
should be something for
everyone in the antagonist, as is true for all of our antagonist roles.
## About The Pull Request
Fixes#93359
Caused by #93165
Inventory screen elements were no longer considered reachable, which
broke mousedrop handing on objects that check "is dragging into
inventory slot"
I don't know the best way to fix this yet but I figured the next best
thing would be to make all of these use the `drag_pickup` element, which
skips this reach-ability check
Thus I refactored it slightly to accommodate for items which should
contextually not be drag-pick-up-abble and bam, works like a charm
